It’s no secret that ripped skinny jeans with a flannel are not the ideal look for the fall season anymore, but what is? This fall season, the trends have fallen under a cozy, casual theme or outfits to go along with the whimsi-goth aesthetic.
The more cozy theme goes along with everyone’s basic idea of fall. The warm tones, pumpkin spice, and comfortable outfits highlight the biggest items of this time of year. First being the Uggs. Ugg boots have always been a fall classic, but this year, more specifically, the Ugg minis and slip-ons have taken over the market. The tan, low-cut, fuzzy shoes have been seen worn in a multitude of ways this year; for instance, you might want to try some mom jeans and a sweater or even some flared leggings and a crewneck. Since we’re already speaking about comfy trends, I think it’s a good time to bring up oversized knit sweaters. This fall, baggy pullover sweaters are in, and the bigger, the better. Textured, patterned, or plain sweaters fit the cozy attire needed for the 40-degree days we get this time of year.
Now let’s talk about Whimsi-Goth. Some of you may have never heard of this style, and some of you might wear it every day without even realizing it. Whimsi-goth comes from the “witchy” aesthetic centering around darker clothing like dark purples, greens, and reds. The particular style contains a ton of maxi skirts and dresses, sheer black tights, vests, and mini dresses with long sleeves underneath. This trend has brought about the rise of dark floral patterns and the color red and continues to keep vests in style. Typically paired with silver jewelry and leather accessories, this style is perfect for the spooky season.
Now for those who want to dress more masculine, don’t worry; there are trends around this season for you, too! You can start with wide-leg, cargo, or jean bottoms. Wide-leg, light-wash denim jeans are one of the top trends for men right now. Now you can either keep your favorite crewneck or hoodies close for these outfits, or you can try a new style and wear a knit sweater, like those mentioned above. Sweaters, not your thing? That’s ok; instead, you can try a button-up. Striped or plain dress shirts are on trend this year and can be the perfect way to dress up any casual outfit. Tan, dark green, gray, and white are essential to any perfect fall wardrobe, especially if you want to fit this type of style.
Where can you look to see these styles? They’re everywhere, all around us. In the media, look at Dakota Johnson or Issa Rae repping the maxi dress. Look at Gigi Hadid and Jennifer Lawrence wearing button-ups. In school, start paying attention to what people wear. Even if the person doesn’t necessarily care about what they’re wearing, chances are they’ve been influenced by current trends, regardless. When asking senior Morgan Clair what she wants to see this fall, she said, “Uggs and flared jeans are such a good combo. Earthy-toned flannels should be brought back for sure.”
Even if you don’t care about fashion, you are going to subconsciously wear pieces to fit the seasons, no matter what. This fall, take a look at your wardrobe, no matter how basic or elevated, and try to switch it up! Try out some of these new trends or modify some of the looks you already have, and you’ll be on the right track for the perfect fall outfits.
