Have you ever wondered about Brewster’s history? I know I have. Especially when it comes to traditions. Today, I’m going to dive into the Brewster sports traditions and how they make Brewster what we know it as today.
Meadow Muffins
The first tradition is called meadow muffins. Meadow muffins was a way to raise money, which helped the senior class pay for their prom. This event was run
by the PTA and students would sell the tickets. Each ticket represented a certain numbered spot on the football field. Then, the school got cows that were provided by Green Chimneys. The football field was painted with numbered spots and the cows were sent onto the field. Whichever spot the cow pooped in would entitle the winning ticket to the prize money.
Donkey Basketball
The second is Donkey Basketball, a tradition that took place in the 1970s. During this sport, staff members would get on donkeys and play a game of basketball. It was super popular! Unfortunately, it lasted a short amount of time.
Bonfire
Next up is the bonfire, a district-wide tradition that Brewster decided to bring back this year. In the past, the bonfire was run by the senior class. The seniors would get out of class and would go into town and find whatever wood pallets they could find. They spent the rest of the school day building the bonfire. All athletes would come in wearing their jerseys. Everyone throughout Brewster would come to show their pride for the game and the town!
Pep Rally
Do you want to know a fun fact about Brewster High School history? Here it is: did you know that Pep Rally used to be in the gym? Pep Rally was still held the week of Homecoming, but looked very different than it is now. When the classes were only about 200 students per class, they could fit everyone in the gym because there used to be bleachers on both sides. There would be cheering and confetti. Each class would get a section in the gym and it would be a competition of who could cheer the loudest and who had the most pride. Now, the Pep rally is held at the turf. Each sports team now plans a skit and performs it for the entire student body to help hype everyone up for Homecoming.
Teacher vs. Student Basketball
Teacher vs Student Basketball has always been popular here at Brewster. Teachers and students face off in a very competitive match. Everyone always has a great time and it is a great event here at Brewster.
Spirit Week
Spirit week is a tradition that is loved every year by students and staff alike. The week before Homecoming has daily themes for the students and staff to show their school pride. The themes are always fun and exciting and everyone loves to get involved. Spirit Week finishes in a school wide Pep Rally that sets the stage for Homecoming.
Hoco Court
Homecoming Court is a tradition where students pick out who they want on the court to win king and queen. Staff members also get to vote on who they think should win. Everyone gets to take part in this tradition which makes it more fun.
Pie in the Face
The Final tradition is Pie in the Face, a new tradition that Brewster introduced this year. Students pay for tickets and get to choose which staff member jar they want their name to be put in. Once a name is picked, the student will smash a pie in the face of a volunteering staff member. This tradition took place at this year’s Pep Rally. Everyone loved it and it was a lot of fun to watch.
Most of these traditions are still carried out today. Traditions past and present are part of our Brewster fabric making student life as we all know it.
