The Successes, the Sweat, and the Shivers
February 14, 2019
All recaps are as reported by team captains. Bear Facts makes every effort to contact any and all captains; any omission is therefore not the responsibility of the news staff.
Boys Varsity Basketball
Captains: Harry Dignan
Coach: Ryan Astrologo and Tom Nelligan
Seasonal Record: 7-12
Highlights included Kobey Hart’s final thirty second game winning shot to beat Jon Jay by 2 at home and their big win over class AA Arlington early in the season. Joe Girard and Pat Nevin both had great seasons, with Nev stepping up into the starting shooting guard position and draining 3’s left and right, and Joey G grabbing any rebound in his path. Future looks bright with the young back court of Kobey Hart and Paul Catalano, both returning next year. Nick Girard is an absolute unit and has the potential to dominate the paint. Jason Whitehead is a walking bucket and should average at least 3 threes next year.
Girls Varsity Basketball Team
Captains: Maggie DePaoli and Meagan Beal
Coach: Mike Castaldo and Matt Cunningham
Seasonal Record: 10-8
Maggie DePaoli was named MVP of the Brewster tournament and Grace Galgano was named All-Tournament player. Meagan Beal was awarded the 2018-2019 Section 1 Scholar Athlete Award. Maggie DePaoli scored her 1000th point against North Salem. Next year, they are hoping to have a home sectional game and make it to the County Center.
Step Team
Captains: Layla Pagan
Coach: Marla Egan
Seasonal Record: 3-17
This season the team raised enough money from the fall bake sale to buy new 3 new sets of uniforms! They have performed for both the Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity Basketball teams during halftime. Most importantly, they have become an even more diverse team with various girls and one boy representing multiple cultures. Everyone on the team has had their moment to shine during their halftime performances as trios and duets featuring Kemi Falana, Carissa Alvarado, Sanai Thomas, Alyssa Lemus, Kayla Charles and Caitlin Otto. Step Team has been able to offer a new and fresh routine at each halftime performance, thanks to the hardworking members on the team and their captain, Layla Pagan. The team looks forward to teaching the Mr. Brewster Candidates how to step for their contest in March! This May they will be stepping at Wells Middle School in order to recruit for next year!
Varsity Swimming
Captain: Victor Cai
Coaches: Renee Acquisto and Clare Carr
Seasonal Record: 5-3
The team’s most exciting meet was a comeback win against Ardsley, giving them their only loss of the season. All the swimmers achieved best times during the season. Along with the efforts of John Jay, the team qualified for States in the 200 yard medley relay and the 200 and 400 yard freestyle relays. Victor Cai will be swimming the 200 yard freestyle relay at States in March. The team is losing several seniors across both schools, so they are looking to merge with a third school for another strong season next year.
Boys Winter Track
Captains: Omar Elabdouni, Josh Herman, and Ryan Neubauer
Coaches: Mike Court and Joe Scelia
Andrew Woodsted broke the school record for Weight Throw. At Class B Championships, Brenden McBride won the triple jump and is ranked first in the section. At the same meet, Finn Ratajak ran 10:22 in the two mile, ranking him 2nd in our section for sophomores in the two mile. Ryan Neubauer ran an outstanding 4:35, placing first in the team’s section for sophomores in the mile. The 4×800 relay team, comprised of Geovanni Zanetti, Ryan Neubauer, Josh Herman and David Alade are currently ranked 1st in their league and 3rd in the county. Ryan Neubauer, Finn Ratajak, Brenden McBride, and Andrew Woodstead will be competing in State Qualifiers. The team is hoping to continue their success into the spring season and hopes that Finn Ratajak will do spring track (but he says he wants to do golf). #Finnforspringtrack
Varsity Wrestling
Captains: Alex Goldberg and Lewis Grana
Coaches: Mike Ford, Nick Ghelarducci, and Tom Looby
Seasonal Record: 11-8
League Record: 4-1
Both Alex Goldberg and Jack Muentener achieved over 100 wins in their Varsity careers. Alex Goldberg, Lewis Grana, Greg Salavec, Passang Sherpa, Austin Matra, Cody Hamblin, Chris Bisignano, and Matthew Henry qualified for the sectional tournament. As a team they placed second in their League, and placed 3rd at the RCK Mat Wars Tournament. They are losing 5 seniors this year, which will be a big loss to the team. They will focus on rebuilding their lineup and improving as individuals. As always, they hope to achieve a League Title, have as many sectional qualifiers and place finishers as possible.
