As a student I know how stressful and tiresome handling school, work, and extracurriculars can be. Many of us, unfortunately, neglect our health because of all these stressful activities we are involved in. Just to be clear, when we talk about “health,” we don’t just mean physical health, but also mental and social health. Establishing healthy habits in our daily routine may benefit us in our daily life choices and it of course protects us from the risk of acquiring any serious health problems from all that stress we struggle with. The word “habit” means a routine or practice performed regularly; almost as an automatic response to a specific event or situations. Those tiny things that we perform in our daily life are called “habits,” tiny changes with remarkable results.
For example:
- Having a good sleep schedule
- Hydration
- Exercise
- A good diet
- Control screen time
- Outside activities
- Having a good eating schedule
- Establishing a goal every day
- Meditation
- Yoga
And there are a lot more: including anything productive you could think of. Now, let’s get into some specifics.
Sleep Schedule
Sleeping is the main factor for our mood every single day. It also improves our brain performance and of course, it impacts our health; sleep deprivation is one of the main factors of getting any illnesses/ health problems. It is really important to maintain a good sleep schedule to stay healthy, although many students don’t get enough sleep either because of homework or tests. We have to try to maintain a good sleep schedule as a need rather than an option, and convert it into a habit.
Exercise
People most likely exercise for one of these three reasons: they either want to lose weight or gain muscle mass, maintain a healthy life, or they just do it for simple enjoyment. You can exercise in so many different ways, I can’t even mention them all. However, some suggestions include, going on a walk, doing some yoga, going for a run, biking, swimming, dancing, and a whole lot more. Exercising not only benefits you physically but also mentally, making it indispensable in your daily life.
Good Diet
A good diet includes eating a healthy and strong breakfast; eating breakfast improves memory, problem-solving ability and it also influences our mood. Not eating breakfast is like creating a distraction for future us; it would definitely distract us during the day, and that certainly affects our comprehension and concentration during class. Therefore, a good diet is a perfect and essential habit we should adapt in our daily routine.
Screen Time
Instead of spending two hours straight on your phone, computer, tablet, TV, you should spend those hours doing something not only productive but something you enjoy. As a teenager I’ve experienced this before; I would lay down on my bed trying to have some free time with my phone and instead of putting it down after a certain time, I would procrastinate and leave my homework for the last second. As a result, I’d ruin my sleep schedule and become tired all day long the next day. This process would repeat over and over again to a point where I would start having constant headaches and my mood would change drastically.
Remember that your success in life often depends upon the many possible choices you make regarding your health. Even though those habits seem very small, every single step counts, so start some healthy habits today.
