With a new year, the Career Skills class has some new members and new ideas. What have they been accomplishing? Here is what they’ve done so far!
Lost and Found, Repurposed
On September 14th there was a Back to School Free Shopping event from 1-6pm at the Brewster Public Library. During the Extended School Year Program in the summer, the Career Skills Interns washed, folded, and separated items that were from the various Lost and Found bins throughout the BCSD. The interns bagged over 30 large garbage sized bags filled with pants, shorts, shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, hats, and gloves. The items were then set up by the interns on the day of the event. CAP and other agencies also donated school supplies and backpacks. The event was very successful and will now be held annually.
Patterson Rotary Breakfast
On Tuesday, October 31st, the Career Skills Class hosted a breakfast for the Patterson Rotary to thank them for their continued support for their annual Adaptive PE Field Day. The students made quiche, spider donuts, scary faced clementines and bananas, pumpkin and blueberry breads, and coffee. They hosted approximately 20 members and did a small presentation about the program. It was a huge success!
Ann’s Place
Ann’s Place is a non-profit, and they provide various supports to families in need who are dealing with and suffering from cancer. Everything they offer is free. In order to provide these services, they host many fundraising events. The Career Skills Class not only does laundry for them through Bubbly Bears, but they also bake for some of their events. Their biggest event is the Festival of Trees which takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving. Community members donated decorated trees, wreaths, and other holiday items.
This year, the Career Skills Class donated 2 trees. The first is a “Baby’s First Christmas” theme with handmade ornaments and a handmade tree skirt along with a stocking stuffed with goodies and a donated “baby’s first haircut” gift certificate by a local barbershop. The second tree is a tent-reading nook tree. Within the tree is a bear blanket, a stuffed bear, 2 mini reading lights, and 24 wrapped holiday books labeled to open one a night for the 24 days before Christmas. The BTA and Career Skills Class collaborated on creating the tree and collecting the books.
With all of these events, the Career Skills Classes are ready for the holidays!
