Career Skills Embraces Flan, Field, and Fun
June 14, 2022
What might be their busiest few months yet, Career Skills really packed it in! Check out what they’ve been up to!
Flan Day: On Monday, May 23rd the Career Skills Class welcomed guest chef and Modern Language teacher, Mr. Gutierrez. Mr. G shared his love of flan and beautiful music with the class while the students rotated into the kitchen to make the most amazing dessert! For many of the students this was their first time hearing of and tasting this delicious dish. The students embraced this new experience and truly enjoyed being assistant chefs while being exposed to a favorite of Mr. G’s. After placing the fresh berries on top, the class not only enjoyed their creation but went back for more!
Unified Basketball: Special Olympics is giving student athletes opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in sharing gifts, skills, and friendship with their teammates. Brewster High School’s first unified basketball team had a successful season! For each game there were a combination of three athletes and two partners on the court who competed against opposing Section 1 schools in our surrounding area. The BHS partners were dedicated to making this season a success due to their peer mentoring, compassion and commitment in supporting our athletes through teaching of skills, and friendships. The athletes were included, developed basketball skills, and learned how to work as a team while creating forever memories and making new friends. A big shout out to the patterns for their leadership: Ismael Arenas, Maura Mcintyre, Nolan Strahley, Jacob Ercole, Marlin Pinto and Rory Charbonneau. Congratulations to the athletes: Courtney McIntyre, Haley Riolo, Jose Esquillo, Max Michinko, Christian Pinel, and Nico Stafford.
Annual APE Field Day: On Thursday, May 26th the Brewster Central School District’s Annual K-12 Adaptive PE Field Day took place on the turf field. Each year, the APE Field Day has grown and more groups in the district and the community want to be part of this very special day. This year was no different and the list included:
BHS Band (50-75) Members – playing the National Anthem, playing for dance breaks and cheering the athletes on!
BHS NJROTC – Color Guard for the National Anthem
BHS Art Honor Society Members – face painting
Patterson/Brewster Fire Department
Career Skills classroom volunteers to assist with the activities
Patterson Rotary, who in addition to volunteering, donated the funds to purchase shirts for all the students and staff. The day was a true success due to the Master of Ceremonies, Ms. Andrea Perdicho, and to all the staff and student volunteers who supported the athletes. A special shout out to Mrs. Lisa and Officer Sadowski who kept everyone safe. The students sprayed water from fire trucks, ran in relay races and an obstacle course, played games with a larger parachute, and got their faces painted by members of the BHS Art Honor Society while listening and dancing to the BHS Bands. It was a wonderful day and enjoyed by all!
