Car Corner: The Roar of Combustion vs. The Ease of Electric

Ergys Derri, Editorial Board

Here comes one of the most controversial topics out there: internal combustion vs electric. Black vs white, fire vs water, man vs machine. Now we understand that the electric car industry is ever so expanding with car companies coming out with brand new electric cars and even halting production of cars that have been on the line for years. But, are electric cars really the future? Is it really worth it?

Now, I could get into the statistics and they’re quite valuable to understand. One thing to keep in mind is the fact that the production, transportation, and the re-charge of all electric cars emits CO2. I mean think about it: you have to mine rare earth minerals with huge machines, get metals from all over the world, fabricate these parts in a factory, ship them to their destination, and last but not least get the energy to charge these cars from a coal burning factory. So CO2 is out of the picture for now.

One thing to keep in mind with these cars is the driving feel themselves. With Teslas being the company most think of when they think of electric cars, we can admire the sleekness of the interior with all its futuristic designs and whatnots. There are a lot of little things in them that make them quite comfortable and nice to drive.

Also, cars like the BMW i7, has its beautiful interior designs with all the screens and ambient lighting one can ask for. Included with the futuristic exterior, it truly is a beautiful car. I mean the interior on these cars are negotiable, but I must say, the interiors on some EV’s are breathtaking and could surpass SOME internal combustion cars. But now we come to the main fighting point: power.

We understand one thing with electric cars: they can pack a punch. With those electric motors pushing all the power out at once as opposed to internal combustion they will pin you to your seat. Plus, there isn’t just one motor in those cars. Some cars like the HUMMER EV have 3 independent electric motors that give it 1,000 hp and 11,500 LB FT of torque. If you don’t know cars, that is unheard of. You are able to move a car that is 9,000 lbs from 0-60 in 3.3 sec. Wow. Just wow.

It’s amazing to think about the crazy acceleration that these electric cars could put out. Yet, people are in utter disbelief that their new favorite cars are coming out in electric models. Why? It is quite simple. With all due respect to the car industry its things in the internal combustion engine that cannot be replicated in the electric. You can put all the sensors and brand new technology you want, but as car lovers are becoming more and more common, we have a love for everything the EV’s don’t have. We love the loud engine noises that blare from the exhaust. We love how we are fully in control of the car. We love the customizability and tunability that these cars have. I mean imagine what you feel when you floor it in a brand new Lamborghini Aventador SV with Gintani Exhaust hearing that V12 screaming behind you as you leave a cloud of tire smoke. Or would you rather hear the Dyson vacuum while you speed up? I mean it could be either way for you, but for most people they would choose the loud V12. Again, it all comes down to personal preference. I can understand if the everyday person loves the EV, but for people who truly understand and feel cars, they would 100% want that engine. It’s not just a habit, it’s a lifestyle. It’s what brings people together, looking at what they did to their engines to get crazy power.

It’s just how it is. Now it’s up to you what side you’ll be on.
