As October rolls around, so does the end of the MLB season. What comes along with the end of baseball season is the Fall Classic, the World Series. This year’s season had ups and downs for teams all over the MLB, but two teams overcame it all to get to the end. The Dodgers and Yankees have met in the World Series 12 times, which is five more than any other matchup in World Series history. The last time these two teams met in the world series was in 1981, with the Dodgers prevailing 4-2. The Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees are two historic franchises who faced- off to see who will win it all.
The LA Dodgers spent the most money this offseason to better their team. They went out and got some of the bigger names in the MLB at the moment with players like Shohei Otthani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Teoscar Hernandez. They were arguably the most productive team this past offseason. They had an impressive season with 98 wins and 64 losses. In the last eight years as manager, Dave Roberts has taken the Dodgers to the postseason every year. Dave Roberts has two World Series wins as manager, which makes him the only active manager, besides Bruce Bochy, with the most pennant wins.
Being in the playoffs isn’t unfamiliar to the Dodgers: the team clinched their 12th consecutive postseason berth on September 19. This currently remains as the longest active playoff streak in major North American professional sports. They have also expanded their streak to the longest postseason streak in franchise history. The Dodgers also won the National League West division on September 12th which is the 11th time in the last 12 seasons. The Dodgers played an impressive postseason by dominating 12 – 5 overall. During the entire postseason, the Dodgers not only had great hitting, but their bullpen played a huge part of their accomplishments to reach such a high point in the season. For the ALDS, the Dodgers played the San Diego Padres. The Padres fought hard and played a tough series but the Dodgers won. Then came the Mets which was another team that played a great postseason, they ended up losing to the Dodgers over 6 games 4-2.
Then came the World Series. In my opinion, the Dodgers played this series more electric than I’ve seen them play all year. The Dodgers truly played the World Series how it should’ve been played. Not only was their offense spark throughout, but all their players were aggressive at the plate and put the ball in play which led to being the most significant highlight for them throughout. They earned the Series win over the Yankees by playing the way they should. The LA Dodgers won their eighth World Series in franchise history.
Like the Dodgers, the Yankees also spent quite a bit of money this offseason, but not nearly as much. The Yankees traded for Juan Soto, which was their biggest move. The Yankees also played a great season like the Dodgers, with 98 wins and 64 losses as well. The Yankees had their thirty-second consecutive winning season since 1993. The Yankees clinched their seventh playoff berth in the last eight seasons on September 18th, then clinched the American League East division on September 26th by winning a game against the Baltimore Orioles. This win led them to their third divisional title in the past six seasons. It was also their 21st divisional championship overall in franchise history and was their 59th postseason appearance, which is the most by a single team in MLB history. The Yankees Defeated the Kansas City Royals in the ALDS, by beating them in 4 games, winning 3-1. Next, the Yankees took on the Cleveland Guardians for the ALCS. They won the series in 5 games by dominating 4-1. In my opinion, this was the best series they played in the entire postseason. Even though they also won the ALDS series, The ALCS was truly exciting to watch. Beating Cleveland gave the Yankees their first AL pennant since 2009 and their forty first in franchise history.
The Yankees went on a 15 year drought of not being in the World Series which was finally broken this year by moving on. They fell to the Dodgers in game 5 with a heartbreaking defeat. Fatal flaws in their defense were the entire reason they lost the final game.
The 2024 MLB was one of the most memorable seasons for fans of these two franchises. History was made that will be remembered forever. At the end, these two teams did what it took to get the whole way. The Dodgers just came out on top.
