With all the popular hits of this year, I’m glad to be reviewing one of the most popular albums of the month. Ready for my hot take? This month, I will be covering one of the hottest albums- ‘GUTS’ produced by Olivia Rodrigo.
the grudge – Rating – 3/10.
It Isn’t a horrible song, but Olivia sounds like she has a lisp throughout her lyrics. It’s really nothing special. I would say this would definitely be a song that you would listen to very late at night after a rough day, but this is definitely not the best song I’ve heard from her. I’m a little disappointed. With the title “the grudge,” I thought I would be getting a heavy bass guitar lead with a more grungy and edgy attitude. Instead, I would say it’s more depressing.
love is embarrassing – Rating – 5.9/10
The beginning immediately gave off the feeling of a “punk-like vibe.” This song definitely reminds me of several high-energy rock songs from the mid-2010’s. The lyrics aren’t really interesting, but I would say the musical elements definitely elevate the song, and then I would understand why people like this song. Overall, it’s a good song, and it definitely gets stuck inside the head for a while.
get him back! – Rating – 1/10
I did see how she wanted her song to start; however, it was not executed well- it just sounds sloppy. I would say this song does have a whiny-like tone to it, which isn’t very appealing, especially since the chorus isn’t really catchy or good (musically speaking.) Besides the chorus, there isn’t much singing throughout. It’s just… bad.
making the bed – Rating – 6/10
I don’t know if anyone noticed, but I do like that she added birds chirping at the very beginning of her song, since making the bed is typically a morning to-do. On top of that, I also like the beginning of her song since it transcends very nicely into her chorus. They are tied beautifully; definitely reminds me of a lyrical dance piece. I would definitely recommend this song for a sad late-night drive. However, I don’t like the electric guitar she adds when she is not singing. It just sounds a little odd in this piece. (More piano should be added to this piece like her other song, ‘logical.’)
logical – Rating – 8/10
I do love how Olivia brings out the piano in this piece, especially during the beginning as an intro into her song; it creates a nice transition. The more I listen to it, it just sounds more beautiful. Very eloquently written. Her voice sounds quite nice in this specific song, instead of whiny. The song keeps building with emotion, then goes quite soft towards the end, which really sets this song apart from the rest. Emotional and beautifully written.
pretty isn’t pretty – Rating – 3/10
I could see how this could be meaningful or relatable for girls, but the song isn’t really good. It sounds like I’ve heard this song before in her other songs since it sounds like she uses the same exact instruments with the same exact rhythms, which makes the chorus a little dull and does not make it catchy. However, besides being so pessimistic, I do like her tone of voice or her attitude towards her lyrics. I would say that makes the song a bit better.
ballad of a homeschool girl – Rating – 4/10
(For people who don’t know, “Ballad” definition: a slow sentimental or romantic song.)
Just from the start, this is definitely not a slow, sentimental song. I do love that the song starts with the guitar, but I kind of get sick of it when I get to the end of the song. I would say this is a typical teenage angry girl song, but who am I kidding? This is Olivia Rodrigo. I’m not a huge fan of the vocals, but I find the lyrics enjoyable and just really funny.
lacy – Rating – 2/10
This song just sounds weird. There is not much to add since I don’t even know how to rate this song. It sounds like she is going to kill Lacy.
The two points are only for the nice guitar.
bad idea right? – Rating – 9/10
Now this is definitely the typical song that Olivia would write. And I love it. This so ng is incredibly catchy, and I will probably be singing it in my head for the rest of the week. However, she needs to move one from her ex (in this song, obviously), lol. I would say this is definitely a great song to jam out to with friends (or by yourself, I don’t judge). Overall, this is a great girly song, and I’m really looking forward to Olivia making more songs like this.
teenage dream – Rating – 9/10
LOVE the piano. This is definitely her best sad-relatable song; it’s just beautifully produced. This song definitely reminds me of ‘What I Was Made for’ by Billie Elish. This just makes me think: this song might be in the next big hit girl teen movie. However, I’m not a huge fan of the shouting-like- singing towards the end. It kind of made the piece a little off. Besides that, the song was really good.
Vampire – Rating – 9.9/10
Some of you might have read Olivia Rodrigo in bold letters and popped down just for this one song, and I completely understand. This is her best song on this album. There is nothing to complain about in this rating. Seriously, this is in almost every single playlist on my Spotify. This is the perfect song to jam out with friends, working out, or just whenever.
Since this song came out, it has been stuck in my head, and I HAVE to give a shout-out to the guitar in this piece. It’s a chef’s kiss.
all-american bitch – Rating – 1/10
No. It’s just a no.
(Only gave this 1 point for creativity in how she came up with it.)
Olivia Rodrigo- ‘GUTS’
FINAL SCORING: 5.5/10
